It is a good week for guitar nuts, as they are affectionately known. There is something about the instrument which attracts a highly-specialised following. Go to any gig or concert by a famous guitarist and you will see hoards of enthusiasts who rarely appear for saxophonists, pianists, trombonists, singers, tapdancers you name it, they will ignore it.
Perhaps it is the traditional association of the guitar with the self-taught itinerant musician. Or maybe it is just the quietness of the guitar as as it lets you play around with it at home, without disturbing the neighbours. On October 13 particularly fine guitar duo Charles Alexander and Andy Robinson play at Beckenham's Pizza Express. Alexander spoke to me about his undying passion for the guitar: "What other instrument is there which gives such portability, such physical well-being as you play and the possibility of such huge stylistic variety in the players?"
True to his word, he and Robinson will be painting an irresistibly colourful musical picture, with works by Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Barney Kessel and Django Reinhardt as well as some of their very own compositions.
